Our events
The Trust’s second annual dinner is set for Friday, 8th August in the Dunedin Town Hall. This will be a night of celebrating home-town excellence. First on stage will be Deborah Manning ONZM, founder of Kiwi Harvest, a pioneer of food rescue in New Zealand and the 2025 Kiwibank New Zealand Sustainability Leader of the Year. Deborah’s is a remarkable story.
We will then be enthralled by arguably New Zealand's most successful and versatile sportsman internationally, Hamish Bond CNZM. In a storied career, Hamish has won three Olympics rowing gold medals, six rowing world crowns, a Commonwealth Games cycling bronze medal and an America's Cup yachting title.
And then highly entertaining and thought-provoking Nigel Latta ONZM will be up. A world-acclaimed clinical psychologist, author, and broadcaster (Beyond the Darklands, The Politically Incorrect Guide to Teenagers and The Politically Incorrect Parenting Show), Nigel received a serious health scare last year, being told he had six months to live, but reported in March a staggering improvement and that he would around “for years to come.”
All funds generated will go towards research into finding an early diagnostic marker for pancreatic cancer, perhaps the most insidious of cancers which afflicts more and more New Zealanders every year. The Trust’s first research project will be announced by mid-year and there’ll be an update on progress on the night.
Planning is well underway for the next two events on the Trust’s calendar so please save the date.
The second annual dinner is set for Friday, 8th August and while speakers and entertainers haven’t yet been confirmed, this night is guaranteed to be a celebration of excellence. Details will be finalised and announced by the end of the month.
And the Trust’s first Fashion Show is set for the Grange Café on Friday, 10th October. A number of world-class fashion houses will be involved – both women’s and men’s designers – and it’s likely we’ll also have a secondary school element as well. As with the dinner, all details will be announced in short order.
2024 was quite a remarkable year for the Trust. Trustee Prof. Chris Jackson has been elected to the Union for International Cancer Control, just one of 16 board members internationally and the first ever from New Zealand in the union’s 90-year existence. Chris has also been appointed to co-lead the brand-new Cancer National Clinical Network, established to improve access to quality cancer services, designed around the needs of all people in New Zealand.
And the stardom attracted to our events calendar has been extraordinary. Shaun Wallace, the Dark Destroyer from The Chase, was with us in July while Willie Apiata VC enthralled us in November at the Trust's first annual dinner. We have been privileged to host them both.
